Summer News

To date the first part of this year has gone well.  The better weather is with us and appears to be holding fine.  As always some of us have had our ailments and bugs to contend with.  We seem to be coping with them quite well and at least this fine weather gives a feel good factor.  Please don’t forget to ask if you feel you need assistance or advice from the RBL.

The County Parade was held a few weeks ago and was well supported by the Branch.  Ten members with our Standard Bearer, paraded through Wilton with other County Branches and attended the Service of Dedication in the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas.  We must not of course forget the good Ladies, who also attended the Service,

Festival of Remembrance

It may only be mid summer but planning for November continues.  Any member, who would like to attend the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall, should contact the Secretary who will apply for the tickets.  This is a wonderful evening to attend and there is still time after the Festival, to catch several trains home.  Please contact me before August.

Membership

This year we have recruited so far, two new members with a further two in the pipe line.  Please keep up the recruiting drive among the many serving members, or recently retired members of the Forces living in the community.

Good news, Marc Witcomb and Christopher (Barney) Barnard have both returned safely from their tour in Afghanistan.  Peter Sherlock 2 Rifles you will remember was wounded during his tour in Afghanistan, is still serving with 2 Rifles.  He is now based in Ballykinler in Northern Ireland.

Captain Richard Ingram RN and Sally are both on tour in the Middle East for the next two years.  Good Luck, please keep in touch.

Local Events

The Army v Navy Rugby match was well attended, with several younger members joining us at the Twickenham ground.  As always the match was a great social and sporting event.  The Royal Navy won!!

We are almost on top of the Veterans Day celebrations.  Please do what you can to add your support to these events.  The details for the Salisbury Parade and Service are attached.

Also attached are the details for the remarkable Fovant Badges Drumhead Service.  Please do your very best to support, in particular, this Service.

Information on the Salisbury Cathedral Concert, 11 September, is not yet available.  I expect this to be available soon then I can pass the information to you.

Very soon a presentation seat will be installed in the sports fields, children’s playing area.  This will match exactly the seat dedicated to our previous President, Nigel Anderson.  That seat was presented by Branch member Jim Pearse with funds from his charity Marathon run.  The new seat will be funded 50/50 by this Branch and the local Playing Fields Association.

Overseas Visits

The RBL County Office constantly send reminders that any member of WW2 vintage, who is considering visiting a recognised UK or overseas commemorative event, that funds to assist the visit are available.  The funds will also consider a spouse and career if applicable.  To apply contact the Big Lottery Fund on 0845 0000 121, or on line at www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/heroesreturn for full details.  They will advise you if you are eligible and send you an application form.  If you are considering a visit please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity offered by the National Lottery.
